Poetry for Pleasure with Joy Gaines-Friedler: Mondays, October 8, 15, 22, 29, November 5 & 12, 11:00am – 1:00pm. Location TBD. We will not be critiquing one another’s poems. Rather, we will be inspired by poems and the poets who wrote them. We’ll look closely at form, literary devices, techniques of various poets, but mostly we’ll look to understand how it is we feel. Poetry helps us find meaning in the midst of chaos – makes us feel less lonely, less “homesick,” and, as Gerard Hopkins says, is a fresh approach to the “deep down things.” Poetry is also, in my mind, democratic (small “d”) – meaning: it is there to defend on behalf of the individual. The personal is the universal. This is a workshop that will inspire you – perhaps to write the next poem, but not necessarily or exclusively. I mean – it can be enough that we are awed by the way Anne Sexton uses simile. Joy Gaines-Friedler is the author of two full-length books of poetry, Dutiful Heart, Like Vapor and Capture Theory. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart and is widely published in over 50 literary journals and anthologies.
